29th Science Club Management Committee Co-opting Phase

Hi all!

The 29th NUS Students’ Science Club Management Committee is opening up 8 positions for co-opting from 10th September 2009, Wednesday to 12th September 2009, Friday.

The positions are as follows:

Assistant General Secretary

· To assist the Honorary General Secretary.

· To be the Coordinator of Student Ambassadors.

· To be the Secretary of the Academic Disciplines’ Co-ordinating Committee.

· To be in charge of the maintenance of the Science Club Storeroom and Activity Room.

· To be responsible for the writing of minutes during meetings and the minutes’ subsequent publishing.

· To maintain the first aid kits.

Publicity Director

· To be the chairperson of the Publicity Committee.

· To co-ordinate the sending out of e-mails to Science students.

· To regulate and co-ordinate all Science Club’s publicity efforts.

· To maintain the Science Club Webpage.

· To be in charge of all Science Club’s notice boards.

· To maintain the Publicity Committee’s inventory.

· To be in charge of archiving all Science Club’s printed publicity materials.

· To regulate the use of printing facilities at Science Dean’s Office.

· To act as an advisor to all Publicity Heads in respective committees.

Video and Photography (VAP) Director

· To be the chairperson of the Video and Photography (VAP) Committee.

· To regulate and coordinate all Video and Photography efforts.

· To be in charge of archiving all Science Club’s photographs and videos.

· To maintain the Video and Photography’s inventory of Science Club.

· To act as an advisor to all VAP Heads in respective committees.

Dinner and Dance Director

· To be the chairperson of the Dinner and Dance Committee.

· To organise Dinner and Dance with the objective of appreciation.

· To co-ordinate Pageant and Manhunt and/or Pageant and Manhunt Preview Bash.

Director

· To be the chairperson of the Committee

· To oversee the booking and usage of .

· To oversee maintenance and development of

· To coordinate enrichment programmes for the Students’ of Science Faculty.

· To take charge of the inventory list.

· To assist in the management of Students’ Hub.

Business Manager

To be the chairperson of the Business Committee.

To regulate and co-ordinate all marketing and merchandising efforts.

To canvass for sponsors for any event undertaken by the Club.

To look out for potential sponsors and establish short and long term contracts.

To promote the club’s image and marketing stratagem to the sponsors in a coherent manner.

To organise Interaction Week bazaar during the first or second week of first semester.

To act as an advisor to all Marketing Heads in respective committees.

ALIVE! 08

YAY! ALIVE!08 had just been over and we could say that it was fairly a successful event given the good weather and high turn up rate despite the fact that we didn’t manage to clinch any sponsors to be our cash donors. The SVC committee together with the other helpers for ALIVE!08 gathered in school the night before to prepare for the big event. Many of us did not manage to get a wink of sleep as we were all too busy packing all the stuff and moving them from school to East Coast Park. When we finally moved off from school to ECP, it was already 5.30am the next day. The bus arrived to bring all of us down to ECP, and walla! There was suddenly a rush of adrenaline through me as I saw the impressive tentage in the middle of Dalbergia Green. I couldn’t believe that THAT tentage was actually for OUR event. We all set off to set up the booths and all the decorations in the dark as the sun had not risen.

In the twinkling of an eye, it was already 7am and the very 1^st participant had already arrived to register for the run. Soon, the participants started streaming in and the queue got so long that I started to panic. However, thanks to the efficient helpers, the queue moved quite fast and very soon, most of the participants had already registered.

By 9am, most of the participants had already arrived and with that our dean of Science flagged off the 1^st batch of runners for the event. It was a really sentimental moment as I saw all the participants running. After 4 months of work, THE day had finally arrived.

The 2^nd batch of runners was soon flagged off 15 minutes after the 1^st batch, and by 9.15am, the 1^st runner was already back! That was amazingly fast as he took only 15 minutes to complete a total of 4km! Woo hoo! (I didn’t manage to get a picture of him though)

After the run was flagged off, we didn’t slack at all as people starting coming back from the run and wanted to leave with their goodie bags. They had to report back to the registration booth, and by then, my helpers were kept busy again. They had to look for the participants’ certificates and their bags, and their names in the list. Woah it was really chaotic at that point of time.

The event ended pretty fast as most of the participants starting coming back an hour later after the flag off time.

We are kind-hearted girls!

And very soon, the crowd started to disperse as people started leaving. The marshals came back and as there was still plentiful of ice cream left, a few of the helpers pushed the ice cream truck around, selling the ice cream to the public. After half an hour of clearing up, the place was all clear of rubbish and by then, everyone was dead beat. We lazed around the event site for almost an hour before leaving the place.

It was definitely a great experience planning this event even though things didn’t go the way I planned. However, looking at the enthusiasm of the helpers and participants got my spirits high and at that time, I felt that all the hard work put in during the past 4 months was worth the effort. Even though we didn’t manage to raise as much money as we had expected, it was still better than nothing. Thus, I hereby thank everyone single one of you out there who had been part of this event for your participation. It is because of each and every one of you that this event had been made possible. I, on the behalf of Science Volunteer Corp express thanks to all of you and hope that you all will continue to play a part for charity. Adios!

SWEAT’ 07!

SWEAT was a 3D/2N event which lasted from 10th to 12th December 2007. Venues include East Coast Park, Sister Island and NUS Science Faculty. Participants included those from NUS Science Faculty, other faculties in NUS as well as any non-NUS students who were interested in joining us. The highlight of this camp would was to expose the participants to a wide range of sports and games that are not so commonly played. Some examples would include windsurfing, dragon boating and roller blading. On top of that, project SWEAT 07 was based on a backpacking theme.

Day 1: Participants congregated at East Coast park where they were assigned to their respective groupings and started plating ice – breaker games and pitching their tentages – their home for the 1^st night at East Coast Park. However, a heavy downpour came not long after the camp had commenced. Although this downpour lasted throughout the entire day, the high spirits of the campers were not marred and they continued enjoying the wide range of events and games planned out for them. Campers got to try out sports like touch-rugby, cage soccer and dragon boating. The day concluded with the participants returning back to school where they were greeted to a sumptuous meal of barbequed food and a Secret Pal interaction session.

Day 2 began with a long ride from school back to East Coast Park. The weather was kind to us and it remained partially sunny but mostly cloudy with occasional short drizzles. Participants got to try out windsurfing and roller blading on Day 2. At evening time, the campers were transported to Sister’s Island! This is the highlight of the camp and the first time in Science Club where we actually brought a camp out of Singapore Mainland. At Sister’s Island, participants got to do some exciting ‘outfield’ cooking. To the guys, this might seem as a boring affair as they had already done this umpteen times back in their army days, but for the ladies, this idea is totally fresh to them and they were totally excited by this idea of cooking food with solid fuels and mess tins! Of course, the organisers did not put the energy that they had consumed to waste. The climax of this event – the eco challenge was conducted soon after the participants had their dinner. The eco challenge required the participants to solve Sudoku puzzles and obtain clues where they could locate their checkpoints. This challenge has put the mental and physical limits of our participants to the test!

Day 3 began with a view of the beautiful sunrise at Sister’s Island. Day 3 was a day where participants are allowed to relax and explore the beautiful Sister’s Island, taking snapshots of the wonderful time that they had spent on this island for the past night. Finally, with the arrival of the ferry to bring our participants back to mainland, SWEAT 07 has come to an end. SWEAT 07 has received many good reviews from the participants, meaning that the hard work of our Science Club Sports Committee has not been in vain.
